understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

Yesterday 13th January, as I sat waiting for a medical appointment, I was talking to a cousin about our various near relatives. She mentioned that her cousin was charming but bad at staying in touch, even with his mother. I complained of the same problem with my nephew. After the test as we reached home less than half an hour after the conversation, she received a phone call from the boy in question from abroad no less, to say that his mother had died in an accident. A phone call and a mention of his mother! Less than two hours later I received a phone call from my nephew who lives in the USA and with whom I hadn't spoken for ages!! Coincidence!! Di
