understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

I was in San Carlos in Mexico. I needed a detailed map of the area. I took the local bus to Guaymas to find a map. I searched everywhere but I couldn’t find one. On the bus on my way back to my hotel I found myself sitting next to a man called Manuel Octavio Soto Lopez. He was a cartologist. After months of work he had just finished drawing a map of the area. In his hands he had the most up to date map of Guaymas in existence. He had just picked it up from the printers! He was so shocked by the coincidence that he gave me the map.
