Meeting someone in an unlikely place

As of the 23rd May 2022 this website is archived and will receive no further updates.

understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

In 1979 I went on an inter-school coach trip from the UK to eastern europe. I knew none of the other people on the trip (I was the only person from my school) before I went and didn't keep in contact with any of them afterwards. In 1994 I was in London (I live in Norfolk) on a day-trip with a psychology evening class. We were travelling on the tube and boarding a tube train I bumped into one of the people who had been on the eastern europe trip, in the same carriage. He didn't live or work in London and was also just on an unusual visit, to do with his work. We briefly made ourselves known to each other (I had recognised him) then he had to get off at his stop. I don't suppose I'll ever see him again.
