understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

Two instances at the same birthday party. I went to a party and met a woman I had never seen before. I suggested she was not local to our region and asked where she came from. She replied that her family had lived in Tunbridge Wells. I told her that I was born there. She then said that they had moved to Walton-onThames. I told her I had attended a school in Walton-onThames for a year. I then looked across at the door and saw a new arrival. I thought I recognised her face. It turned out that her mother and I had been very good friends some 40 years ago. I had stayed with this family when I had moved and house alterations were done. Although I had seen her mother on several occasions I had not seen Emma, her daughter in all that time. Two incidents at the party of a man I had only known for eighteen months.
