understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.
Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.
I attended Grammar School in Lancashire 1951-1954.
Year 2 saw my class mistress as a Miss R who taught latin although never teaching me.
We spent 16 years in South africa; I followed a career in engineering 1982 - 1998.
Over 30 years from last knowing Ms R, I needed a piece of equipment to fit to a boiler.
I had seen a technical rep. with the name R who left me with a brochure describing the various options of equipment available. I eventually chose the particular model, but still had a few questions re.
the size and application. I decided to visit the issuing office in Benoni ....a suburb of Johannesburg.
Mr R was not available, but the receptionist said I could speak to his father.
I said to his father that I thought his name was unusual(thought it was Prosser). He confirmed that he was Welsh and that the name was of Welsh origin. I stated that I once had a teacher named Peggy R .
He confirmed that was his Aunt!!!

"Brassnobs"
We travelled quite a bit and one of my primary schools was in Lancashire circa 1949-50.
Our headmaster was called Mr B. One of my school friends was called Fred H.
Returning from South Africa(previous story) I could not find another engineering job, so took a position as Concierge to a large block of apartments 1998-2009.
Probably half way through this period, I was talking to a resident who had his mother and Aunt visiting him. They hailed from Lancashire and said that I wouldn't know where they lived it was a suburb of Manchester. I eventually dragged out of them that they lived in Cadishead some 10 miles outside M/C.
Oh I said ; I went to school in Cadishead in about 1950. The head master was Mr B who we called Brassnobs!! They knew the school well and their neighbour was a Fred H .....
all this after well over 40 years!!!!
