understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Before my wife and I were to be married, we went on our "grand tour" of Europe. It was the autumn of 2002. We went for six weeks. We loved the U.K. and Ireland so much we didn't make it to the continent until week four. The first stop when we went to France was Bayeux and the D-Day beaches in Normandy. Being Americans, whose grandfathers and great uncles fought to make Europe free, we of course needed to see the beaches and cemetaries of those lost. So, we decided to take a guided tour of the area in a large van. There were four other tourists with us, but we only remember two of them. Brownyn and Jane from Australia. Everybody enjoyed the tour and said our casual goodbyes. Our next stop on our adventure was Paris. We stayed only a couple nights. We are "country people", and enjoy a more laid back atmosphere. Armed with our tour books we saw the usual tourist sights. At the Place de la Concorde there are fountains. My wife had her camera, and we needed somebody to take our picture in front of the gaudy fountains. Looking around, we see Brownyn and Jane. So we all took pictures of each other. Chatted a bit more and parted ways again, laughing that seeing them again by coincidence. Our tour went on through France, Switzerland, and into Italy. By that time we were running out of time, and cash. While in Rome, we of course went to see the once mighty Coliseum. We walked around the place, and while leaving who did we bump into again? Brownyn and Jane of course. None of us could believe it. Three times we had found each other, without coordination or even sharing our plans. So, we all decided to meet at a cafe in one hour. We were'nt really thinking because it turns out there is a myriad of cafes around the Coliseum. A little bit bewildered we just chose one and sat outside near the street hoping that we might happen to see them again. But we didn't and we made our way back to our hotel looking for a rest since we were leaving the next morning on the overnight train to Paris. We got to our hotel floor, and wouldnt you know it, there they were! Browyn and Jane were staying not only in the same exact hotel, but on the same damn floor! Needless to say we were all "floored" at this. So, finally we all went to a nearby pub/cafe, sat down and hoisted a few pints together. I'm pretty sure that we exchanged addresses and the like. But I have no idea where that paper went. This is a story that I like to tell when I have the time because a chance meeting twice was amazing. But somehow "finding" each other three times, in large cities, without sharing any information on itineraries is pretty amazing.
