understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

Further to the coincidences I posted regarding the number 666, I was again drawn back to the place where the coincidence began, when someone said they grew up near there, through a poem on whisky. It mentioned ~Ardbeg which is the name of a whisky distillery and the name of the road where I lived. I heard the poem on whiskies around the same time I was thinking of the place i lived where my connections with the number 666 began due to noting that street on a map on the wall in Marble Arch, ran into the road where the person grew up near. When I bought the bottle of whisky Ardbeg name of road nearby I was interested to see that the 12 year old whisky vat was bottled in 2012 though had 1999 on the label, i was wondering if this was pertaining to their commercial van the Beastie? it was a space whisky so you can turn upside down in space?? or whether production and bottling were separate? It was relevant to me that 99-2012 is 13 years as I was buying the whisky for for someone who was born on the 13/08 marrying someone born on the 7/08 later having a baby in the seventh month of 2013 those numbers, 13 and seven again!! or is this being silly. The whisky Galileo was voted whisky of the year in 2013. And when I was wrapping it the guy I was with was flicking channels on the TV and settled on a science channel which was the hammer and feather experiment on the moon!! What Galileo had surmised without even being on the moon!!! Not related to the above but related to links on the subject of coincidences, I was 'educated' about coincidences through someone I met through Private Eye and after bumping into a friend in the street who didn't recognise us, he said sorry I had an Ian Hislop experience -which was when he went up to Ian Hislop editor of the Private Eye thinking it was his friend, (he said what are you doing here and Ian Hislop said I live here), We went to one cafe with this friend and then on to another, this second cafe which when we came home and switched on the TV was the cafe we'd just been to The person I was with sceptical about little coincidences although had had some amazing mind boggling ones too and this coincidence was especially quite meaningful to him.... In another flat I lived where someone I met was very interested in coincidences, there were many coincidences between the people living there and a story one of the people living there told of going to see a psychic that was interesting too, and to them more than just a little remarkable, or just a coincidence. I sometimes think going back there something special might happen, I feel partly confident and partly unsettled by the coincidences I have described a balance between the two confident and spooky feelings. The way the person interested in coincidences helped me organised how to think of coincidences gives me confidence, though. And there is a simply fun element in coincidences which means I can tell you them with confidence!!?
