understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

On Saturday, Sept. 21st, 2013, my wife and I were heading to the "The Moose" restaurant here in town. On the way, “The Moose” FM radio station was playing Boz Scaggs’, “Lido Shuffle”. No coincidence there. I commented that this song reminded me of an old public school teacher that we once had, (who liked to dance to this song with his wife at local social functions back in the 70's). He sadly passed away a couple of years ago here in North Bay. Once we arrived at the Moose, and placed our order, we noticed that the restaurant was filling up quite nicely and that pretty much all of the tables had been taken up and the level of the crowds conversation increased in typical fashion. While waiting for our order, we chatted casually about trips and such and my wife mentioned Las Vegas, and how she would like to go there someday. I casually asked why and she mentioned that ever since her sister had went with her boyfriend, at the time, she was curious to see what it was like. I corrected her in that it wasn’t her boyfriend that her sister had went with, but a girlfriend of hers whose name eluded us both at the moment…I actually said out loud to my wife…”yeah, her name escapes me”?...and as soon as I said it, someone in the crowded restaurant called out for “Kelly”…which was clearly heard over the rest of the mixed chatter taking place. My wife and I simply looked at each other for a split second, and the look of shock on her face was priceless. I said, “you heard that too didn’t you”??? She was speechless for a few seconds, as she realized what had just taken place. The girls name that eluded us both at that moment, was of course, “Kelly”. Upon our departure from the restaurant, we decided to head to Wal-Mart to pick up a few items. After about 10 minutes or so of walking around, we headed over to the electronics section and I couldn’t help but notice the song being piped through the p.a. system…”Lido Shuffle”. I pointed it out right away to my wife, but she decided to dismiss the fact that it was just pure luck that we would hear the same 37 year old song in one night from 2 different sources, immediately following what had transpired in the restaurant? Not sure if there is any connection there, but sure is interesting when things like this transpire.
