understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.
Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.
In the early 80s, I was a Deputy Headteacher in Hertfordshire. I was single, ambitious to progress my career and to travel. I saw an advertisement for the Headship of the International School in Kotakinabalu, Malaysia and decided to apply.
I received all the information and completed the application forms but needed to send two passport photographs, which I didn't have.
I was staying, for the first time, with an old friend near Ashford, in Kent. She suggested that there would be photo machines in Folkestone, as it was a busy ferry port, so we drove there to find one.
The first one we found was broken, as was the second. Eventually, we found one on the seafront and I had my photograph taken.
While we were waiting for the machine to process the pictures, a young chap came along the promenade and stopped to use the photo booth.
He was wearing a T-shirt labelled "Kotakinabalu - Malaysia"!
I asked him if he had been to Kotakinabalu as the photos I was waiting for were to accompany my application for a job there and I'd appreciate any advice he could give me about the area.
He told me that he hadn't been there himself but the T-shirt had been sent to him by his sister, who lived and worked there ............. in the International School!
Needless to say, I was amazed! I told him that I was applying for the Headship of that very school.
Then came the biggest surprise.
He looked puzzled and told me that his sister was going out with the present Headteacher and, to his knowledge, he was certainly not leaving the school.
When I got home, I telephoned the agency handling the job applications, who assured me that the position was still advertised but that they would check.
A few days later, they rang to confirm that the advertisement had been withdrawn as the present headteacher had decided to stay on.
