understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.
Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.
In the summer of 2007, I was working as a rep and found myself in a motel one evening, feeling rather bored. So I decided to text my son, James who was on holiday in Rome at the time. I thought an appropriate message would be something in Italian but as my command of the language is poor, I thought it would be just as fun to to send the opening lines to the famous Walls ice cream advert..."Just one Cornetto, give it to me, delicious ice cream, from Italy..."
James texted back, wanting to know where I was hiding?
On enquiring about the odd question, he replied that he heard his mobile phone alerting my message, and read it at the exact time he was purchasing an ice cream at Rome airport. James was so convinced I was observing him he looked around the concourse to find me.
