Is it coincidence or just life as it should be?

understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

I've just left a posting and thought I'd write how I've come to this web site, some would say a chain of events or coincidences. Back in December last year my wife and I received a letter from Tesco proposing to take over a disused public house and convert it to an Express supermarket. For various reasons we were apposed. The letter had a form that we filled out and were going to return to Tesco. At that point we learned the Parrish Council had called a meeting of our villagers to gauge reaction of this proposal from Tesco. The meeting planned for our community hall would hold 200 people, on the evening of the meeting there were too many villagers to fit in the hall, our vicar offered the use of the church. More than 600 people felt the same as my wife and I. The meeting had many comments with many others agreeing. I felt the Parrish Council would have difficulty to work with the villagers in a organised manner and suggested they put together a committee to handle all the objections, this was wholly agreed. My wife asked if I would put myself forward to be on the committee, I responded "I don't think so, finding the time would be an issue", within seconds a total stranger sat next to me asking the same question, so I put my name down. 16 of us got together and formed the committee, a chairperson was elected, now bearing in mind I've only lived in the village for 2 1/2 years I was some what shocked to be elected as chairperson. Our campaign move forward with activities that included engaging with the media. Just this week I was interviewed on BBC Radio Kent, after the interview the reporter and I got talking, she recently experienced some life changing events, that could be viewed as coincidences. I mentioned to her reading a specific book about coincidences maybe of interest and she mentioned this web site that I find myself at now. So the last few months is a chain of coincidences, our lives are full of what we term a coincidence as we can see from your web. I'm not too sure what your are looking to gain from the analysis as so many coincidences are unexplainable, though if you analyse them for long enough you will come up with a label. I have read a few of the postings, what I would like to know is if the coincidence meant anything to the writer and if any, did they make a choice as a result of their experience. With out making that choice the coincidence is meaningless.
