I dream of Jeannie

As of the 23rd May 2022 this website is archived and will receive no further updates.

understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

I teach computers voluntarily in the local library system. Today, one lady came in talking about the 'I dream of Jeannie' series which she had been googling. This featured Barbara Eden as Jeannie. I am also engaged in a conversation with someone on Facebook about the relationship of coincidences to the propensity of people to believe the supernatural along the lines of Susan Blackmore's research. I got home today and noted that there was a film on featuring Barbara Eden in the lead role. I marked it to view and thought little of the rarity of one of her movies showing up the same day. Later that PM I watched a re-run of the pilot movie of Due South which features David Marciano as Ray. Writing back to my facebook correspondent I remarked on how believers have a tendency to misunderstand the role of coincidence in their lives. I turned on Visions of Terror, the film with Barbara Eden only to find David Marciano was in it too! Eden of course is the supposed place of the start of creation,(and also the name of the bottled water we just bought) and perhaps if I was a less rational being I might be given to think this was some 'message from God' which presumably is the kind of thing which happened to my facebook correspondent.
