understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.
Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.
As a child I was holidaying in Austria with my parents. Each evening the hotel would sit us with another English speaking family when we ate as the hotel had mainly German speaking guests. On the second evening I was talking about the tiny Irish village that my grandmother had recently moved back to. I described the village as having "one shop, two pubs and 3 cars make a traffic jam...." at this point a gentleman on the table next to us (who we had assumed to be German) turned around and commented "I happen to own that shop!" Every year from that point onwards he would send my grandmother a calendar!
