understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

When our children were quite small we had an Austrian au pair for a year. After she left we kept in touch with her and visited her a couple of times in Austria. She had a number of jobs over the years and travelled widely. I remember her saying once that she had worked in Ireland for a short time, but she gave no details. In recent years I have emailed her quite frequently to practice my German.
A few years ago my wife asked my daughters where they would like to go for a summer holiday. My older daughter had no preference but my younger daughter was adamant she wanted to go to Ireland. Not knowing Ireland well we said we would think about this, and then my wife remembered a former colleague who had married an Irishman and lived in a small village somewhere. Apparently she rented out a holiday cottage. So my wife contacted her and sure enough the cottage was free for the two weeks of our holiday. We booked it.
Sometime later I emailed our former au pair (to practice my German) with general family news. I said we were going to Ireland for a holiday. Over lunch that day I asked to my wife whereabouts we were going in Ireland. She told me she had forgotten the name of the village, but had written it down somewhere. A couple of hours later she found her note and told me we were going to stay in a village called Caherdaniel, in Co Kerry. I looked this up in a guide book and found that Caherdaniel is a small village with a population of about 800. It has two pubs, one of which has the memorable name, "The Blind Piper".
That evening an email from our former au pair arrived. She wrote - "Great news to hear you are planning a holiday in Ireland. Do you remember I worked there for a while? If you go to Ireland you must go the County Kerry and visit the village where I lived. It's called Caherdaniel. I was a barmaid at a pub called 'The Blind Piper'."
