understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

1st September 2011 we set sail to New York from Southampton, arriving on Saturday 8th November. On 11th, the world trade tragedy struck as we waited for the bus to the world trade centre. 1st September 2012 playing safe, we went to Glastonbury on a date chosen purely for convenience. On the M5, 30 miles from our destination, our car engine blew its gasket and we lost all the oil. A new engine costing £2000 was needed. 1st September we flew to Gran Canaria to our timeshare. We were super careful and had an uneventful three weeks until, two days before coming home, I slipped and broke both my arms quite badly.
