understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

We spent Christmas 2000 at the Hotel Kanta in Port el Kantaoui, Tunisia, it is a very cosmopolitan hotel with guests from all over Europe. Another couple in their early thirties with their son of about 10 were staying at the hotel. I immediately noticed that the boy was strikingly similar in looks and build to the son of a friend of mine when he was that age (though Richard is approximately 8 years older than the boy). My husband (who wouldn't recognise his own face in the mirror!) also noticed and commented on the similarities. We never spoke to the family (we had no reason to) but I heard the mother speak English with a heavy north/north eastern European accent - the father and son did not seem to have much English (or French) as they spoke to each other but left all the interaction with the waiters to the mother. The resemblance was so striking we commented to each other every time we saw them. The boy looked remarkably like his father. We even told Richard when we got home that we know what he will look like when he's 35! I have no idea what country they are from or live in. June 2001 I responded to a 'bargain weekend' offer in a national newspaper - I collected the tokens, selected the date we wanted (first weekend in August - my husband's birthday and our wedding anniversary) and where we wanted to go (Lake District) and phoned up. The Lake District hotel we wanted was fully booked, so I selected a London hotel at random. Sunday 5 August 2001 we were in London and decided to walk from our hotel near Kings Cross to Westminster and the London Eye. We walked through Bloomsbury, Russell Square, roamed around Covent Garden and the Strand, stopping off for a cuppa. We then strolled around Whitehall, finally crossing Westminster bridge to get to the London Eye, where the queue was so long we were advised to return the next day. Disappointed, we strolled along the South Bank, crossed the river to the north side at Charing Cross then strolled back down Victoria Embankment to Westminster. From there we walked back up Whitehall, had a pub lunch and called in at the Whitehall Theatre to book tickets for the matinee performance of The Blues Brothers the following day. We walked up Birdcage Walk and started to flag a little, so decided to have a little sit down in St James Park (on our way back to Westminster for a walking tour of Westminster - yes, we're gluttons for punishment). It was a lovely sunny day and the park was busy, and every time we saw an empty park bench, someone got there just before us (drat), so we ended up walking across the park and were close to the exit when we saw an empty bench under a big shady tree facing the lake. We got there and gratefully sat down. We just sat there and watched the world go by - this included Charles Dance who seemed to be on a bit of a mission, judging by the pace he walked at. Suddenly out of no-where appeared the little family from the Hotel Kanta, mum, dad and son, just strolling through the park "Did you just see them" said my husband, which I'm glad he did because it proved I wasn't imagining the whole thing. If the hotel in the Lake District hadn't been booked we would not have been in London, if the queue for the London Eye had not been so long we wouldn't have gone on our long walk, if any of the other seats in the park had been free we would not have been sitting in that particular spot at that particular time. So what are the chances of a couple from Birmingham being in a particular hotel in Tunisia in late December 2000 and in a particular spot in a particular park in London at about 3pm on 5 August 2001 at the same time as another couple (address and nationality unknown)?
