understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

In the 1960's, while living in Stevenage, Herts, my wife and I went on holiday to Devon. While there, we settled down one day in a secluded part of the beach, and suddenly a couple appeared who turned out to be near neighbours of ours, although we were only on nodding aquaintance and had never discussed our holiday.
