understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

I play regularly on a small country golf course on the Coromandel in New Zealand. On a regular golfing Saturday, about two years ago I stood up on the 7th, a short par three and in front of my three playing partners I hit the ball straight in the hole for my first ever "hole in one". The following Saturday on the same hole, with three new playing partners and with a certain amount of banter, "show us how you did it Al etc" I took my stance, and talked them through it. "Hold your mouth like this, more wrist cock but most importantly think happy thoughts", I swung at the ball and bugger me it flew like and eagle and again dropped straight in the hole. I found some stats some where to suggest it was in the order of 60 million : one. I also note that every time I now play the hole I am somewhat disappointed if I miss! Regards Alastair Sims
