understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.
Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.
In February 2004 I fell ill and was hospitalised for tests. In transpired that I had endocarditis and one of my heart valves needed replacing. On 1st April 2004 I had a replacement Mitral Valve heart operation.
My parents had booked a holiday to Benidorm for late March/ early April and as I was not in a life-threatening condition they decided to to continue with there plans.
My father had high cholesterol and regulated this by his diet. He was persuaded to change his routine by taking medication to correct his high cholesterol ( I believe this was in the previous 6 months ) He had NEVER had a heart attack/angina prior to any of this.
On 1st April 2004, nearing the end of his 2 week holiday, he awoke during the night feeling a little unwell. Whilst standing by the side of the bed and talking to my mother, he had a massive heart attack and died.
Was it a coincidence that he died on the same day that I had by-pass surgery on my heart? Was it a coincidence that soon after starting to take medication to regulate his cholesterol level he had a massive heart attack? Who knows!!!
