understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

Reading the article in the News paper Mail on Sunday about this website and having had many strange coincidences happen to me over the years I decided to go online to share one of them with you. I started to look for a pair of scissors to cut out the part of the article in the paper with the web site address on it but could not find them or a pen and paper to note it down so I started to rip that part of the page out. My wife , sitting across the room asked what I was doing and when I explained she said I hope you are not tearing out an article I want to take to work to show a friend about red plates at mealtimes helping people lose weight. Without batting an eyelid I answered not to be silly as the paper has nearly 100 pages in it and its hardly going to be on this page...then I stopped in amazement as I noticed the article she was referring to was next to the one on coincidences and I had completely torn through it!! I have kept the bits of the paper as it was just so unusual. Some years ago we were at the airport about to fly off on holiday when my wife started getting sad as we had just left her two babies, Sophie and Lucy ( cocker spaniel dogs ) at the kennels. Two young girls were annoyingly running around our area very excitedly. My wife said to me she hoped the dogs were alright when a man stood up and shoued to the two girls " Sophie, Lucy sit down and stop annoying everyone !!!!! " My computer hard drives had failed but were covered under a Hitatchi warranty. The drives had to be sent to an address in the Netherlands. As I queued in the post office I was thinking to myself how much is this going to cost and then I thought should I say to the cashier this parcel is for the Netherlands or this parcel is to Holland. At that very moment a chap was being served and I heard him ask in a loud voice: “ How much is first class to the Netherlands?” Years ago I read in an astrology book that my lucky number was 8 and my lucky day Tuesday. When I left the Navy and was wondering If I would ever get another regular long term job, I applied to join the Prison Service. I did get taken on and started on the 8th day of the 8th month and yes, it was a Tuesday. My house ( that my wife choose when I was away in the navy ) is number 8. My works key number is 242. Add 2+4+2=8. The house I grew up in was 89. Add 8+9=17. Add 1+7=8. I started my next job on 6th November…6 + 11 = 17…1+7=8. I was talking to a fairly new fellow prison officer in a pub years ago about coincidence and was telling him the story of how I went to work one morning and I had been issued with a new key number, 242. The strange thing was, the next day I was off and went swimming. I walked into the changing room and up to the nearest locker. As I put the coin in the slot to lock it, I noticed the number was 242. Now this is where this story gets bizarre. My friend who is a very down to earth type, just smiled and shrugged, took a sip of his beer and then asked me why I had been given a new key number. I told him I didn’t know but it sometimes happens when they are doing inventories etc. I said I had had my old key number, 187 for about six years…..he gave me a strange look, laughed and said… “My keys are 187 !!!!!” Explain that one!!

I really think there is more to all this than mere chance
