understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.
Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.
Early in the 1980s, whilst on a slow journey to the Christian faith, I was talking with a friend about prayer. Mark asked me what I prayed about; I said that I prayed about world peace, famine, the environment, etc; all major matters. When I asked him what he prayed about, he told me that he prayed about anything, even a headache if he had one. I felt that God wasn't interested in minor personal issues and we ended the evening by agreeing to disagree. The following day we drove to Bristol where Mark wanted to buy a guitar and we managed to find a parking meter with about 5 minutes left on the meter. Neither of us had any change, but we decided to 'chance it' and have a quick look in the shop. As I got out of the car I said, "What we need now Lord is 10p" I turned away from the car and there on the ground, a metre away, was 10p. Being really slow [and a Christian as well!] the co-incidence about the previous evening's discussion about minor matters didn't occur to me until a day later.
