understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.
Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.
Last November my family and I , who live in Italy, lost our five year old Basset hound. Unfortunately, our little dog went through two weeks of tests and operations and when we finally decided that we had no other choice but to put her to sleep it was absolutely heartbreaking.
While , maggie, was being treated we didn't even take into consideration the cost of the treatment we just wanted our dog to be better so when we finally got the various bills from the vets and the crematorium we didn't know how we were going to pay for it all. Both my husband and I are freelance so we don't have a regular income.
Well, a week after maggie's death one of the schools I work for phoned me up to tell me that they were still holding a cheque for some work that I had done last year. The amount was the exact amount we needed to pay the vet and the crematorium. Incredible
.
Then in December last year we had planned to go to the uk for Xmas but money still being a bit tight we didn't know how we'd be able to afford to go. The day before we had booked to fly out of Pisa I received a tax reimbursement for 2009 ( for anyone who lives in Italy knows the chances of ever getting money back from the Italian revenue are extremely scarce) for the sum of 1,000 euro! So we went to the uk and had four wonderful days with my family in Bournemouth .
You could say I won the lottery twice!
