understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

In 1968, In the first term of my MSc year ( I was studying Mathematics and Statistics) I rented a flat at 5 Grenville Place in Cork, Ireland. A few years later, a classmate of mine showed me the book 'An Investigation of the Laws of Thought, on Which are Founded The Mathematical Theories of Logic and Probabilities.' It was written by George Boole, the first professor of Mathematics at Queen's College Cork (now UCC). In the preface, written in 1853, Boole gave his address as 5, Grenville-Place. In recent years, the historical society placed a plaque at this address. When I rented the flat, I did not know that Boole had lived there.
