General coincidences & synchronicity

As of the 23rd May 2022 this website is archived and will receive no further updates.

understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

Synchronicty is a far better way to explain co-incidences. You may be thinking of someone just before you bump into them. This is also to do with the 6th sense and our pre-cognition of things. This happens to me on a frequent basis. Knowing someone is going to phone, thinking of someone and bumping into them. This is because I had ALREADY sensed their presence psychically and therefore the actual manifestation of that person is merely a formality! You can also dream of future events and these may influence our day time behaviour and affect the decisions we make. (EG: Planes that crash have statistically fewer passengers on them than average - with lots of last minute cancellations!) Co-incidence or precognition? As to birthday connections in families, this is to do with DNA and Astrology. I have three of a particular sun sign in my family all born on the same day, and it was also the same day my grandfather died. There are also other astrological patterns that appear to run in my family. Yes, things that co-incide together belong together at that moment. Call it destiny, call it fate. Call it what you will. There is no such thing as a random coincidence. Everything is connected and there are decipherable patterns to our lives. Everything that happens is already meant to be. I believe that we "intuitively" sense them BEFORE they happen, thus making it appear like an out of the blue and random experience. In fact, nothing is further from the truth. All life goes in cycles. It is all written. We just don't know the script! So when something happens, we dismiss it as "pure co-incidence." No. It is fate at work. That's my view anyway.
