understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.
Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.
I am a geologist and have many friends all over the world. I studied and undergraduate degree in St Andrews and then studied for a PhD in Edinburgh. While in my first year in Edinburgh one of my fellow PhD students went to India to study Rivers in the Himalayas. While on field work they met may people from all over the world pack backing through India, but one day while on a bus they ended up sitting beside some other people from the UK. Turned out that the other people where also Geologists, studying structural geology... when they started talking about university, something suddenly clicked and they both simultaneously asked "do you know Gillian McCay?" - yes it would appear they both did. The "other Geologists" where friends of mine from my undergrad.
