Friday the 13th

As of the 23rd May 2022 this website is archived and will receive no further updates.

understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

I do apologize for posting this not in all respects frenetic story again, but the one posted yesterday - on the 13th, Friday - remained full of mistakes . (It can be considered as my personal disaster on such a gloomy day. ) ... This is the second time within less than 2 years that I traveled on a Friday on the 13th. There is absolutely nothing "mystical" about this. These were cheap flights and because lots of people are superstitious they are reluctant to choose such a day. Consequently a flight on the Friday on the 13th is, as a rule, cheaper than a flight on the 12nd or the 14th (Thursday, Saturday ). I don´t attach much importance to this and wanted the cheapest possible day. --- (It was on the 13th of January 2012 when I last time traveled on the Friday the 13th. That was the day of the Costa Concordia disaster.)
