understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.
Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.
In 1989 I was teaching English at a high school in Istanbul, Turkey. In one of my classes there was an American foreign exchange student. When she introduced herself she told me she was from California, where I am also from! I asked if she was from northern or Southern California...she was from Los Angeles, just like me. I asked her what part of Los Angeles, and she said the Pasadena area, which is where I was from. Then I asked her what high school she attended, and she said she went to a small, girls' Catholic school. In those days there were a few catholic high schools, so I asked her which one. She attended the same one I had attended in the 1970s, Alverno High School, with an enrollment of about 600 students, in tiny Sierra Madre, California.
