understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

About 20 years ago I went away for a saucy weekend and stayed in a hotel in Yarm. That Saturday I placed an accumulator bet predicting football match results at the bookmakers. This was the first time that I had ever done this. I was quite surprised when my predictions had all come true and regretted only placing a £1 stake. I went back to the bookies to collect my winnings which amounted to £132.67.
The next day I checked out of the hotel and was presented with a bill amounting to £132.67.
