understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

Watching 'Stargazing Live' on iplayer just now, I was being told of a distant star called Fomalhaut. Interested to see if I could find it on my phone's Google SkyMap I sat watching the program while the app loaded up. I was trying to remember the spelling of the star so I could type it into my search function, but as I looked back at my phone I was amazed to find that in the centre of my screen was Fomalhaut, meaning that my phone was 'pointed' at the star by pure chance. I wonder if the odds of this are calculable?
