understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.
Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.
Many years ago having acquired my very first P.C. and internet connection plus having reached a certain time in life, I decided my first jaunt into the world wide web would be tracing my paternal ancestry. Some 5 years down the line I hadn't really got anywhere, despite posting on family history sites such as Ancestry.com, when I was contacted by a gentleman from London (we live in the Midlands) who shared my surname. He also was tracing his ancestors and helped me to find my family back to my great great grandfather who originated from Devon, as did his ancestors. Through eventually acquiring relevant certificates I was able to go back one more generation. I relayed this to my 'helper' who then contacted me with the startling news that our 3 x gt. grandfathers where brothers, making us related. To add to this we then discovered that we were both born in the same year, 3 weeks apart. Further discussions between us also revealed that he was born and lived in Aldershot, his father being the store manager of Woolworths, moving from the area when he was about 4. During this period we, my father being in the Army, were posted to Aldershot and my mother often visited Woolworths with me in tow. We were able to meet in person a couple of years ago and the family resemblance is most definitely apparent. Although I've experienced several 'coincidences' throughout my life this is the strongest one for me.
