Family Birthdays

As of the 23rd May 2022 this website is archived and will receive no further updates.

understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

My name is Pamela. I have four children - Adrian, Angela, Simon and Charlotte. Polly, Adrian's wife and my daughter Charlotte gave birth to a daughter and son, respectively, within half an hour of each other on the same day,22 September. This also hapens to be Adrian's birthday. Also, Adrian's son Joe and Charlotte's daughter Ruby share a birthday, 28 January - six years apart. My son's wife, Elizabeth, has a daughter, Kate, from a previous marriage and she shares my birthday, 16th July. (Quite a few years apart!).

In September 1941 Picture Post did an article on my family. With my father away in the Air Force it was about how my mother was coping bringing up 6 children. It included quite a few photos. I am now in my 83rd year and two weeks ago one of these photos appeared in our local paper of my brother and me as part of a local Artist's collage. You can imagine how surprised and delighted the artist is to learn that the subject he chose from all the photos available on English Heritage web site is now an elderly lady living about 10 miles from him. He is going to present me with a framed copy of this picture this week and the local paper will follow up thr coincidence.
