understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.
Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.
In the early sixties i worked for a national TV company which was involved in a change of name due to a government allotment of licenses,I was made redundant. After being paid a lump sum of money and being re-employed in my job I put my windfall to good use and took a mortgage on a small house in High Barnet,Herts. After time due to a couple of additions to the family I decided to upgrade to a brand new house right out past Witham in Essex. Now though i was still in a very interesting job in TV travelling in lots of countries, money was a little tight so my Wife (a former dressmaker) took a home job machining tool kits with a sewing machine supplied by a company in London. Now occasionally due to breakdowns, a young sewing machine engineer was sent to our home and we got to sort of know each other but like all things, that came to an end. In 1974 I split from my wife and after 5years with my new partner, commuting from such places as Guildford and AshVale to London I lost my Job in TV due to drink driving. Having lost my job and driving license I took a Gov.t. retraining course in carpentry which eventually led to a job at the Middlesex Hospital in central London. Feeling quite hard done by by losing such a good job and now my partner, the pub was the only thing left. Another young man who worked in the hospital. a different department, was also a drinker in the same pub but we did'nt have any thing in common and did'nt mix but after quite along time we became friendly and started to drink together. In about 1981 I sold my marital home in Essex and having regained my license by now I bought a 1000cc BMW Motorcycle, being footloose and fancy free I enjoyed the freedom. One day on a whim I said to Alfie(we by now had become quite good friends) do you fancy a ride out somewhere to which he said he would like the chance to see his family in Harlow. When I met the family I thought to myself ,the brother looks a little familiar but I put it down to resemblance to Alfie and thought no more of it and so we moved on to see another brother, well do you believe it,knock me down with a feather,Alfies brother was the young man who serviced my ex wifes sewing machine many years ago,he even recognized me too. After my many changes in lifestyle , homes and friends, how odd is that?
