understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

I was visiting my son's family in Massachusetts and presented my daughter-in-law with a string of pearls that belonged to my mom. My daughter-in-law never met my mom. I proceeded to tell her about my mom saying that to fully appreciate how wonderful my mom was you have to hear just one story. When I was 22 and going skiing the next day and had no hat she ran to a store to find wool that matched my ski sweater and then stayed up all night knitting me a hat. My husband and myself left a bit later to head back to our home in New York which is about a 2 hour drive. On the way I received an email from an old guy friend whom I had reconnected with about a year before simply saying that he had just come across this picture of me and thought I'd like to see it. It was a picture of me 46 years ago in ski clothes holding that hat my mother made!
