understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.
Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.
I was going through a difficult time in my life - I had decided to abruptly end a relationship and I was suddenly without a place to live, staying with friends and relatives. One night I had a dream - where I dreamed I was sleeping and having a dream! The dream inside the dream was about a spirit guide who silently showed me a turtle. The message was that this was my totem (just FYI, I am not Native American and do not pay much attention to things like that).
In the dream I "woke up" and went into work where I ran into a co-worker I liked very much but did not get to see often because she worked irregular hours. This seemed very real. I mentioned the dream to her and she said that she had a book about totems and would bring it in for me to look at. With that I woke up. I felt a little confused by this, but actually went into work (as far as I know). I happened to actually see this co-worker that day and of course I mentioned the dream. She said "You know, I do have a book about Native Americans and there is a section about animal totems. I will bring it in for you." It was like a replay of the scene that I had dreamed about.
We figured out when we would be there at the same time again and she brought in the book and helped me find the section on animal totems. I looked up the meaning of "turtle." The first sentence that I saw said "the turtle carries its home with it all of the time, so it is at home anywhere that it travels in the world." I realized immediately that the message from this spiritual guide was that my true "home" is not a place, but that space inside of me, inside of us all, that we carry with us all of the time. It is that space of simple awareness that holds the truth of what we really are.
We are each of us home already, in fact it is impossible to leave this home, no matter where life takes us or what circumstances we find ourselves in. I copied the page in the book, but eventually lost it over the years. I have not been able to locate the book since and lost touch with the co-worker long ago. None of the books I have found since on animal totems references this about the turtle. But coincidence or not, that was exactly the message that I needed to hear at exactly that time in my life.
