understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.
Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.
At lunchtime a colleague described her son's upset at a car accident outside her house involving a neighbour's cat . The cat had been run over and had broken both hind legs. The expectation was that it would need to be put down.
On return to my desk a few minutes later the bbc website was open and there was an article describing Hemingway's distress at having to put his pet cat down after it was -- run over and had both back legs broken
