understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

Recently a local historian telephoned to ask us the date our aunt had died, who had been a much loved local teacher. Out of the blue we could not remember. So next day I went into our office and contemplated the piles of old diaries I had kept on the bookshelves since the 1970's, facing the gargantuan task of finding the appropriate entry. I pulled out one at random, and opened it in the middle - and there was the information! Memorial Serice for Auntie Mabel, 1st July 1996 at 2.30 p.m. The task which could have taken me perhaps an hour, had taken me just a few minutes! Ridiculous, of course, but I had the distinct feeling that the dear old lady had helped me.
