understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

During the week that I began watching a DVD of "The Count of Monte Cristo", 400 minutes of the 1998 French tv-mini-series adaptation of the classic novel by Alexandre Dumas père, taking it in over four days, we interrupted the sequence after the third night by viewing a Netflix DVD of "Room", which had arrived by mail (we wanted to send it sent back the following day), not knowing that the movie of a young woman held captive for seven years along with the five-year-old child she’d conceived & given birth to would include a significant reference to the Count of Monte Cristo’s own incarceration & means of escape.
