understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

In the late 90s I worked as a doctor in Queensland for a couple of years. I'd let my flat in Gosport but with several months to run the tenants gave notice to move out. I wasn't going to let the flat again, preferring to leave it empty as I would be returning in a few months. Then someone told me that an Australian doctor (whom I'd met a few times) at the local hospital was going to England in the near future for a few months, and might be looking for somewhere to live, so I called him and let him know I had a flat that would be available shortly. He asked where it was and I told him 'Portsmouth area' (as that might be more familiar to an Australian than Gosport), he said that was a shame as he was actually looking for somewhere in Gosport. It turned out that the practice he was talking to about working with was the nearest one to my flat, and I knew them very well, having done locum work for them many times before I went to Australia. The flat became available just before he was due to go to England so he ended up renting it, and it just so happened that he only needed it until shortly before I returned to England for good.
