understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

I've two unconnected friends with consecutive land line phone numbers. On Tuesday the 10th January 2012 my Husband and I were coming off the M42, and found ourselves following a car to the same car park, from where (we discovered) the owner walked to collect her children from the same school from where we also collected our grandchildren. Her reg was FLO2 DFK, ours is FLO3 DFK. She lives in Nottingham, us in Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands & we connected in Ashby de la Zouch! Another one is a friend and I had lost touch and arranged to meet in Beatties in Sutton Coldfield, she was then living in Tamworth, Staffordshire. When putting my hand to push the shop door open another hand went up at the same time. It was my friend.

My daughter had had life saving surgery. It was a desparate time for the whole family. When we knew she was going to survive, my parents in law went to Lake Garda for recuperation. They sat at an outside table listening to a couple talking about a little girl who could only have been our daughter. The couple were friends of my Mother's best friends from the other side of Birmingham, we live in Sutton Coldfield. On another occasion, at a meeting of an outdoor pursuits club, we were told about a young niece from Australia, but working in South Africa. She came to stay with her Uncle and Aunt at the same time as there was a celebration party at the club cottage which is in the middle of knowhere down a 1 1/2 mile track on the mountains above Tremadog in North Wales. The Uncle and Aunt took her with them. On returning back to work her boss asked about her holiday. On hearing that she had been to Wales, he asked where. She said, 'I don't know, but the cottage was called Pantifan. 'Oh I know that' he said ' I've been there' He is the partner of one of the club members!
