understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

A couple of years ago we stopped overnight at a small hotel on the outskirts of Colmar, France. Looking out of our window, we noticed another British car drive into the car park, and wondered how many other British people were staying there. A few minutes later, my husband went down to the lobby to discover that the couple who had just arrived were a work colleague of mine and her husband.

I don't know whether this counts, but in response to the item on the Today programme this morning I visited this website. Upon clicking the link 'read coincidences' the first article was one about the town of Colmar where I spent a fortnight on a French exchange in 1975! it was a real 'blast from the past moment'...if you had asked me yesterday the name of the town I could not have possibly told you having long ago forgotten most of the details of the experience!
