Coincidence in the Sky

As of the 23rd May 2022 this website is archived and will receive no further updates.

understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

Again another remarkable coincidence in my life. A number of years ago I was flying from San Francisco to Manila. A woman seated next to me was looking at her passport. Normally I respect privacy and am not nosey, but something compelled me look at her passport. My eyes went straight to her date of birth (I don't know why). It was the exact same date of birth as mine, December 3rd, 1935. I've never met anybody born the same day as me, so of course I spoke to her about it. We were both astonished and amused. It was a few years later that I learned the most incredible thing about such a chance meeting. The first trans-pacific flight from San Francisco to Manila landed on December 3rd, 1935.
