Coincidence of names

As of the 23rd May 2022 this website is archived and will receive no further updates.

understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

In 2000, I moved 160 miles from my home town and now work in a larger town where a woman working in the Post Office has the same name as mine. This may not sound unusual but our name is 'Moira' which is fairly unusual. On visiting the Post Office one day, to post a package to my daughter, the Post Office Moira noticed that my daughter lives in Ascot - which is where her daughter also lives. Within a few sentences, we discovered that our daughters are both named Sarah Louise, both are 40 years of age within a few months of each other - and both are married to Jonathans. Both us Moira's also share ongoing platonic friendships with our ex-husbands and, in my case, my husband is also good friends with him. It's also quite a coincidence the number of times Moira serves me in the Post Office, even though it's a very busy Post Office, with half a dozen or so counters open, and a single queue which is controlled by the automatic Post Office system.
