understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

Some 12 years ago we were staying with friends in a privately owned chateau by the medieval walled village of Castelsagrat in the south of France. To celebrate my birthday our friends took us for dinner in the cafe restaurant in the village. There were two other parties present: one included 'Miss Fareham' the year my wife was Mayor of Fareham some 18 years earlier; the other party included someone who had been in the Royal Navy with me.
