understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

In holdem, everybody is dealt two cards face down. These are known as hole cards. And I am experiencing a pretty amazing coincidence regarding these hole cards, as pocket pairs--that is two of the same rank. It's not that I get more than my share of pocket pairs, but when I get a pocket pair, odds are like close to 100% that the next pocket pair will be the same as the last one--repeating one time. Then I will get another pocket pair, and the next time I get a pocket pair it will be the same one--but AA, KK, QQ, and JJ are not part of this. The repeats will be of 22 through TT. The repeats occur not 100% of the time, but like 8 out of 10 times. One other thing that is odd but I don't think the odds of this are really far out--I have gotten dealt AA back to back 3 times recently--I mean, on the very next deal. (On the pocket pairs I speak of above, the repeats will come later.) The odds of being dealt AA are 1 in 221--thing is, that is going to happen. This is something that just seems really far out there. Not long ago in an hour and a half, I got beat by queen trips 3 times during that one half hour. The odds of that happening are crazy--but the thing is, it's going to happen sometime, somewhere. The consistency with which I have been dealt repeating pocket pairs should not ever happen. This has been happening for months. Everybody knows cards come in surges. Everybody knows it's a game of momentum. I have an idea that people inadvertantly play a role in bringing those surges on or in delaying them. Like seems to attract like.
