understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

Some years ago my wife and I went on holiday to the USA. We had no definite travel plans, except to fly into San Francisco, pick up a hire car and then tour around staying in hotels and motels. The only other plan was that we had booked a flight back from Los Angeles 18 days later, where we would drop off the car. We travelled around covering hundreds of miles, including several days in Las Vegas, and worked our way back towards LA. Two days before our flight home, we decided to stop in a hotel in Ventura. When I parked the car in the hotel car park, it was next to an identical car - model and colour. When I looked more closely I was astonished to see that the car number plate was the very next number to mine. I don't remember the number now, but, say, if mine was XY246895 this one next to me was XY246896. I left a note under the wiper of the other car pointing out the coincidence, but next morning the car was gone with no reply!
