understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

At a small family campsite at Beg-Meil,Brittany,in 1987 there was mutual recognition between myself and a young woman who was in the same aisle of tents. She was a supply teacher to the school where I'd recently become deputy head. I bought a tape of a S.American group I saw playing pan pipe music in the town nearest our Beg-Meil campsite. The day before term started I was listening to the tape in school when another teacher said,"That's Micamac, isn't it?" I said "How did you know the group's name?" She said,"I saw them in the same town and I saw you there.I called out to you,but you must have been out of earshot."

Another teacher hearing this said,"We were staying in the next village,Fouesnant."None of us had discussed our holiday plans beforehand.

Andy, the guy from the family on the pitch next to ours, said they were from near Macclesfield, but had lived in Zimbabwe for years.I asked if he had any friends there still and he replied his best friend Gerry T did.I asked if Gerry had relatives in England. He said he'd visited Gerry at his mother's home in Green Lane,Formby.I told him my father had bought Mrs.Tonks's house and I had lived in it from 1968 to 1976.
