understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

Richard S our ex next door neighbour shares his birthday with his daughter Helen. Not very remarkable? His date of birth is 29th February 1952 and Helen's birthday is 29th February 1980. I would love to know what the odds of that are.

On 12 June 2008 my husband and I were holidaying in Spain in our motorhome. We had been touring inland and were making our way back to the coast when I suggested a diversion to look at a 'fairytale castle' at Alarcon. As we got nearer we found ourselves following an Austrian motorhome and guessed that the owners were also heading for the castle. We arrived and introduced ourselves. After the usual pleasantries we found out that the couple were planing to stay there the night so we agreed to join them although this wasn't a campsite. (known as wild camping) We spent a pleasant evening with them and they told us that they had been on holiday with friends in Morocco but were returning seperately back to Graz in Austria.
On the 17th June we were back on the coast. We stopped for lunch and a swim at a place called Los Arenales which is not far from Alicante. We were just packing up to leave when another Austrian motorhome stopped next to us and we found out that they were planning to 'wild camp' there. We decided that we would join them and got out tables chairs and a bottle of wine. During the course of another delightful evening the man, Walter Patak, told us that he was an artist and he and his wife had been to Morocco with friends to paint scenes for a calandar. I told him about the other Austrian couple we had met who were also returning from Morocco. At that moment the penny dropped and when his wife showed us a photo of their friends we realised that they were the people we had met. They all came from Graz and were best friends.
