understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

In 1986 I went to work in Xian, China. I met a man with whom I subsequently had a 22 year relationship.
In the early days of our relationship we discovered that we shared a birthday (August 17th). I was born in 1946 and he was born on my 14th birthday in 1960. When I saw his passport I discovered that he was born in Aylesbury, where I was born. On our return to England our mothers met and discovered that they had both had their babies at the Gables Nursing Home.
