understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Hi there, I was born (ilegitimate) in 1948. My natural mother was Elsie Wigley, and my father Eric Morris. I was at the time named Raymond Peter Wigley, but then adopted by Charlse and Mary Green who gave me the name of Peter Michael Green. And so I remained for many years. Many years later I traced my natural mother who had by then married a Bob Wolstenholme. Not my natural father, Following svereal relationships I met and settled with a Gracia Day (her married name). She was divorced and wanted to change her surname, but obviously didn't want to take on mine. (Gracia Green -err, I think not!) She didn't want to revert to her maiden name (Robinson) as she had had a disfunctional family. So she chose to take on her mothers maiden name of Travis and that this would apply to her 3 children. We were at that point a settled relationship, and as I had no great attatchement to the name Green, I decided that for practical reasons we'd cement the family idea, and in 1996 I also changed my surname to Travis. About a couple of years later I was talking to Elsie, my natural mother and told her of the change, not thinking that it would be of much interest to her. But she looked very suprised. She asked Gracia "Why the name Travis?" Gracia explained that it was her mother's maiden name, "Oh!" says my mother. "It was my mother's maiden name as well". I've done all the appropriate geneaolgy, and yes this tracks back. "Travis" is actually a very rare surname, and seems to have originated in Preston. Gracia's ancestors came from the Lancaster side of the Pennines, and mine from the North Derbyshire, South Yourkshire area. But can you give me the probability of my forming a partnership with someone in Norfolk with the same unusal mother's maiden name from that area. Gracia and I were together 16 years. In many ways unfortunately we are no longer together, but we are still in touch. Best wishes Pete (Travis aka Green)
