understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

Two pregnant Air Force wives, one of them my mother, were returning by ship to the Uk from Aden in 1937/38. One went into labour whilst on board and my mother, as the only other woman on board, had to assist the doctor in the delivery of twin girls. Eleven years later I took a girl home from school as her parents were too far away for her to return home. Yes, it was one of the twins my mother had helped deliver.
